Following the handover of the £5325 raised at the Hands across the Bridge on
Sun 28/04/02 the final total raised in memory of ten year old Derry boy Anthony
Martin who died from Leukaemia in April 2001 closed with the astonishing total
of £55,500.The money raised has been passed to the Childrens Cancer Unit at the
Royal Hospital in Belfast where Anthony was treated. This event was organized by
a good friend of the family Martin Mullan A further £10500 was also raised for
Macmillan Cancer Relief from the sales of the Show me Heaven CD sung by local
singer Michelle McLaughlin. The Northern Ireland Childrens Cancer Fund for
Children also received £2500 raised via a sponsored swim by local man Michael
Doyle. This total of over £68000 is a huge testament to the kindness of both the
people of Derry and indeed across the world who were touched by Anthony’s
passing.Manus and Majella Anthony’s parents wish to thank not only those who
donated so generously but the many individuals and organisations who helped run
such a variety of successful fundraising events. They also wish to thank all the
local media without whose help we could not have raised so much money for these
worthy causes. Manus added “We are very proud that so much money was raised in
Anthony.s memory and we have raised peoples awareness of this cruel disease in
our midst and wish to dedicate this effort to all the children and their
families who have lost their battle with cancer and pray for those still
fighting against this illness. We are now helping the local Foyle Branch of the
Leukemia Research Fund Branch who in just six months have raised a five figure
sum. Manus and Majella added finally “We are hugely proud of our little boy who
one day in April 2002 united 3000 people on the Foyle Bridge in the common cause
of the fight against children’s Cancer .Like his favourite Bart Simpson he
indeed was a special little guy. For further information please contact Manus
